About 500 factory workers and 140 salaried personnel are affectex bythe five-week shutdown. said in May that productionj would be stopped for thred weeks at the local facility as the automaker reducews inventory by temporarily idling a numbetr ofits plants. That period is being combinedx with theregular two-week planned companywide shutdown that startds on June 29. Spokeswoman Nina Price said that a smalk workforceof “maybe 100” is staying on the job duringg much of the plant’s three-week shutdown. No schedule change at the localk plant has been ordered at this time because of an extensionh of the temporary summertime closures at sevebGM factories, she said.
Thes e locations include the Oshawa, Ont., car plant, and other assemblyt plants at Lordstown, Ohio, Shreveport, La., and Orionn Township - which receive engines from Tonawanda. The latest round of closureas was announced this week and range from one added week at the Oshawa factory to four additional weeks at the Lansingt Grand River plantin Michigan. Most of the locations will go down for three added weeksin July.

Florida went into the recession nine months ahead of the rest of theUnitexd States, and excesses in housing and commercial real estates are considerably worse than the nation as a the report says. Statewide, the median salesd price of existing homes is down aboutf 45 percent from the peak of the housingb boom inNovember 2005, but the drop in the Tampa Bay area is even steeper at about 60 percent. Employment conditions continuedto deteriorate, the report says.
The state’sx unemployment rate is expected to top out around 11 Wachovia projects, with a loss of 720,000 including 430,000 jobs lost this reported 137 layoff events during the firsg quarter, more than double the previous Job losses are heaviest in industriesz with direct ties to the building boom, including construction and manufacturing, Wachovia said.
